What is an extension ladder?
An extension ladder is a non-self-supporting adjustable ladder that consists of two or more sections, allowing them to be extended and reach further heights.
Types of extension ladders
- Short extension ladders – These are easily storable, compact ladders. At Step and Store our shortest ladders extend up to 4.2 metres and 5.7 metres.
- Tall extension ladders – These are often used for painting, cleaning gutters and reaching roofs. At Step and Store our tallest extension ladders extend up to 6.3 metres and 8.1 metres.
- Double extension ladders – Double extension ladders are made up of two sections that help provide extra height.
- Triple extension ladders – These are made up of three sections and are usually used for DIY and industrial work.
Extension ladder facts
- Extension ladders consist of two or more sections that can be extended using guides or brackets.
- Extension ladders aren’t self-supporting meaning they must be used against a stable structure like a wall or roof.
- To ensure safety when using an extension ladder, a 4:1 ratio from the foot to the top support should be used.
- Opting for aluminium extension ladders provides a lighter ladder option that’s easier to manoeuvre and transport.
What size extension ladder do I need?
When buying an extension ladder, it will ultimately depend on the height you need to reach. When working out the length you need, use a 4:1 ratio. This means that for every 4 feet up, you will need to move the ladder 1 foot out. So if you need to work on a 12ft wall you will need to move the ladder 3 feet out.
How far can you extend an extension ladder?
This ultimately depends on the size of the ladder you have. However, they typically extend to 40 feet or more.
How to lock an extension ladder
An extension ladder can easily be locked by using the rungs to secure the telescopic sections of the ladder at the right height.
